Surveillance and Data-Tracking Disproportionately Affect Immigrants Under this Administration
From ALPRs —Automatic license plate readers, like Flock— to the collection and sale of personal information by data brokers, immigrants are under the near-constant threat of tracking and apprehension. Often without due process or significant external oversight.
Author and journalist Narimes Parakul tracks the many ways these forces intersect in her ground-breaking, 4-part series, Surveilled and Sold, and we had the honor and pleasure of discussing her important work with a hybrid audience, both in-person and online.
Robust Conversation and Provocative Q&A
Narimes spent an hour discussing her work with our moderator, highlighting many of the issues that currently face immigrant communities, but that increasingly affect us all.
She went into detail on the subject matter of her series, and also discussed where the idea came from and how she became involved. Our audience listened with rapt attention, and posed well-formulated questions during our Q&A that furthered the conversation and provided insight for us all.
The event finished with Zine handout by our guest and encouragement to stay involved in issues of surveillance and due-process for immigrants.
